Jesus, Son of David, shouted the blind, but how did he know it?
As Jesus passed by Jericho, there was a blind man who shouted out Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me (Luke 18:38).
A blind man addressing Jesus as son of David is
as startling as ever. Neither the learned Pharisees, the Jewish priestly class,
the Roman elite, nor those who witnessed his miracles could recognize who Jesus
was. Here we have a blind man who had no physical vision possessing unimaginable
knowledge of who Jesus was.
How could this blind man address Jesus by his Messianic
and prophetic title “son of David?” God had spoken to David “When your days are
over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed
you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He is
the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of
his kingdom forever (2 Samuel 7:12-13). Jesus came from the tribe of Judah same
as David, and his kingdom is eternal and timeless. This prophecy is fulfilled
through Jesus.
New Testament begins by addressing Jesus as Son
of David in the very first verse Mathew 1:1. If such is the importance and
relevance of this title, how did this blind man know of this even before Gospel
of Mathew came into existence? Who was
this blind man? Where did he gain this revelation knowledge from? Had he done a
deep study of the law of Moses and prophecies before he became blind? Was he
looking for its fulfillment during his life?
We do not have the answers for all the queries
about this blind person. But there are a few things that could be confirmed
about him. He knew who Jesus was, he knew the prophecies, he knew Jesus came to
save and heal though he was blind. More importantly he had faith in Jesus. He
lived in hope of seeing Jesus one day. He believed that Jesus would heal him. This
was no chance encounter. It was the reward for his hope and faith.
Faith is the conviction of things hoped for and the assurance of things unseen (Hebrew 11:1). The blind man hoped for the arrival of the Messiah. He was blind yet he lived in full assurance of receiving his sight. Therefore he was well rewarded. He received his sight. When the vision came back, he saw Jesus in the very first sight.
Is there a better reward for one’s
faith on this earth?
